D. Rajendra Babu Biography

D. Rajendra Babu was a famous film maker and screenwriter associated with Kannada cinema. He directed a few Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi movies too. He was active in the film industry since early 1980s, till his death in November 2013. Nanu Nanna Hendathi, Olavina Udugore, Ramachaari (1991), Ramarajyadalli Rakshasaru (1990), Halunda Thavaru, Appaji, Diggajaru, Amma, Encounter Dayanayak and Bindaas are his big Kannada hits. He was married to noted south Indian actress, Sumatra who has been active in the industry during 1980s and 1990s. This director has been successful for many remakes he made in Kannada language. But for the same reason he was equally criticized as well.

He was born in 30 March 1951. Babu joined the Kannada film industry in early 1980s as an actor. But destiny was something else and he turned a director. Jiddu starring Tiger Prabhakar and Jayamala marked his debut as an independent director though the movie was not successful. It was followed by the silver jubilee success of Swabhimaana and Naanu Nanna Hendthi which cemented his position as an established director of the industry. Rekthabhishekam was his single Malayalam movie and Pyaar Karke Dekho, his single Hindi release.

With 1990s he concentrated most on remakes. In 1989 he made Yuga Purusha, remake of Karz. Chinna Thambi, Beta, Raja Hindustani, Munnabhai MBBS, Natpukkaga, Darr and Kathal Kottai (Sirf Tum) are some of the successful movies he remade to Kannada. Though he was able to maintain the success streak through remakes, he was criticized too. He is a recipient of Karnataka State Film Award for Best Screenplay twice – Habba and Jodi Hakki.
