Chuni Lal Biography

Chuni Lal was a soldier of 8th Battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry of Indian Army born in Bhaderwah. He hailed from Bhaar village in Doda district of Jammu&Kashmir state. Decorated with Vir Chakra and Sena Medal (Gallantry), Chuni Lal was killed on 24 June 2007 in a militant flush-out operation in Kashmir’s Kupwara sector. 

These militants, all of whom were also shot dead, were trying to enter into India crossing the Line of Control. The success of this militant flush-out operation, which claimed his life, earned him Ashok Chakra. He also was awarded AC, VrC, SM during his service period of 1984–2007.

Naib Subedar joined the 8th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment at the age of 19 in 1987.  He offered his services volunteerily and participated in an operation to capture the Bana Post, located at apx 7000 meter in the Siachen Glacier, for which he was awarded the Sena Medal for Gallantry. He was also part of the  United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Somalia and Sudan twice. Incidentally his team in Sudan won a UN citation for valour display of exemplary courage.

Chuni Lal was in charge of a post in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir on June 24, 2007. They were postrd at a height of 4,500 meters where visibility was relatively low and temperature was in the range of minus 3-5 degrees. At around 3:30 in the morning, his team sensed movement on the Line of Control where they were posted and decided to check it. 
Chni Lal immediately alerted his soldiers and exchange of fire followed that continued for more than an hour. Naib Subedar Chuni Lal and his soldiers surrounded the whole area. During the exchange of fire Naib Subedar Chunni Lal was hit by the enemy's bullet and lost lot of blood.

Chuni Lal had died on the way by the time a helicopter airlifted him to the nearest Army Hospital. Naib Subedar Chuni Lal was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra on 15 August 2007 for saving the lives of his men and displaying outstanding bravery, battle field leadership and sacrificing his life to protect the country.
