Chittaranjan Das Biography

Chittaranjan Das was an Indian politician and leader of the Swaraj (Independence) Party in Bengal under British rule. He was popularly known by the name, Deshbandhu. He was the first major of Calcutta Corporation. He was born on 5th November as the son of Bhuban Mohan Das in Bikrampur, now a part of Bangladesh. He was the nephew of the Brahmo social reformer Durga Mohan Das. Satish Ranjan Das, Sudhi Ranjan Das, Sarala Roy and Lady Abala Bose are his cousins. Siddhartha Shankar Ray and Justice Manjula Bose are his grandchildren.

 

He was educated in England and later practiced as a barrister in India. His public career began in 1909 with Aurobindo Ghosh’s Alipore bomb case where he was able to successfully defend him. He participated in Non-Cooperation Movement of 1919-1922 and was one of the leading leaders. He initiated the ban on British clothes by banning his foreign clothes. He started a newspaper named, Forward whose name was later changed to Liberty. When the Calcutta Corporation was formed, he became its first Mayor. But after losing a motion on "No Council Entry" to Gandhi's faction, he resigned from his presidency of the INC at the Gaya session. Later he founded Swaraj party.

 

He was a believer of Gandhi’s non violence principles and strived for the unity of Hindus and Muslims. He believed in communal harmony and dreamt of freedom through this strategy. His legacy was carried forward by his disciples, of whom Subhas Chandra Bose’s name comes first. Das gifted his house and the adjoining lands to the nation to be used for the betterment of the lives of women which later became Chittaranjan Seva Sadan. Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital was established in its property in 1950. During his last days, Das spent his days at Darjeeling.
