Chilakamarti Lakshmi Narasimham Biography

Chilakamarti Lakshmi Narasimham is a prominent writer belonging to Telugu language. Gayopakhyanam (1909) and Ganapati (1920) are his noted plays. He is also known as a freedom fighter, social reformer, novelist and short story writer. He has also written some biography works of great men. He was visually impaired since his youth and lost his vision completely after graduation. He has served as a Telugu instruction at the Government Arts College in Rajahmundry. He was a simple person believing Gandhi’s principles and wore only khadi dress.

 

He was born at Khandavalli village in West Godavari district in 1867. His family originally belongs to Veeravasaram village in West Godavari district. Punniah was his birth name which was renamed later after a popular temple deity. He resembled his maternal grandfather, Bhadraiah Sastry a lot, who died just one year before his birth. He inherited grandfather’s literal skills as well. Chilakamarti suffered from partial blindness since young days. He was not able to read blackboard and sought help from his friends. He studied at different schools due to his illness. However he succeeded in completing education and took first class in the Comparative Examination in 1881.

 

As a writer he attempted first with modern style of writing. He started with small poems, satire works and plays. He had a unique style of capturing reader’s heart with his style of narrating incidents. Keechaka vadha in 1889 was one of his earliest plays and the last ones were Harischandra and Bammera Potana (1946) which are incomplete. He has also translated a few plays from Sanskrit. He ran three magazines, "Saraswathi", "Manorama" and "Desamatha" between 1898 and 1916.
