Chhagan Bhujbal Biography

Chhagan Bhujbal is a prominent politician and minister from Maharashtra who has served as 5th and 8th Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. A leader of National Congress Party, he won state assembly elections in 2014. He currently serves as the Public Works & Special Assistance Department, (Excluding Public Undertaking) Maharashtra State. Former mayor of Maharashtra, his campaign for 'Sundar Mumbai, Marathi Mumbai' was quite well-known. He was also noticed for initiating programs to plant new trees in open spaces and road sides and took steps to create beautifully landscaped island-gardens at traffic signals and road dividers.

He was born in 1947. He was a vegetable vendor in Byculla Market where his mother used to own a shop, before he reached politics. He completed Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from VJTI, Mumbai. He started his political career in association with Shiv Sena in the 1960s in his teens. He was deeply influenced by Balasaheb Thackeray in those days. He was elected as Shivsena Corporator in 1973 and later Mayor of Mumbai and remained as a prominent young leader. His association with Shiv Sena lasted for 25 years. However he established himself as an outspoken and fearless personality of the party and he left the party in 1991 to join the Indian National Congress. When Indian National Congress leader Sharad Pawar decided to split and form a new party, Chagan decided to join Pawar.

In 2004, his name was linked with multicrore stamp paper scam when the prime accused, Abdul Karim Telgi admitted that he had given payments to Bhujbal. He also faced criticisms when violence, day time robbery and destroying vehicles attacked the peaceful district Nasik. His name was also dragged to Maharashtra Sadan Controversy.
