Chetan Bhagat Biography

Chetan Bhagat is an Indian writer and a speaker who has written many bestselling novels. His two famous novels have formed inspiration for Hindi films. His simple, vivid style and linear narratives attracts everyone. He has been branded as the biggest selling English language novelist in the history of India by the New York Times. Also, he has been named by Time magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

 

Bhagat was born on 22nd April 1974 in New Delhi in India in a middle class Punjabi family. His father was an army man and his mother was working in the agricultural department of the Indian government. He completed his schooling at Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan in New Delhi and then joined IIT Delhi to complete his Mechanical Engineering degree and then pursued his higher studies at IIM Ahmedabad. He was honored as the Best Outgoing Student by IIM Ahmedabad. He started his career as an investment banker in Hong Kong and worked there for 11 years before he came back to Mumbai.

 

He married Anusha Suryanarayan in 1999 whom he met at IIM Ahmedabad. The couple has twin sons named Shyam and Ishaan. Writing was his passion and he has written six novels to his credit. He wrote his first three novels during his tenure as an investment banker and he quit his job to pursue his passion for writing and settled in Mumbai. His own love story formed the inspiration of his book, 2 States: The Story of My Marriage.

 

The books he has written are Five Point Someone, One Night @ The Call Center, The 3 Mistakes of My Life, 2 States: The Story of My Marriage, Revolution 2020: Love, Corruption, Ambition and What Young India Wants. The films Hello, 3 Idiots, Nanban, Kai Po Che! and 2 States are based on his books. As he was not given due credit for the film 3 Idiot which was based on his novel, Five Point Someone that led to some controversies but later he kept himself away from that.

 

Bhagat is writing for many English and Hindi newspapers like The Guardian, The Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar. He worked as the judge in the program Voice of India Star Anchor Hunt. His SPARK speech at the orientation program of the BBA students at Symbiosis in Pune and the speech, Becoming One With the World at the HT Leadership Summit at Delhi made him famous. He has got many awards for his achievements.
