Chelladurai Biography

Chelladurai was a popular comedian associated with Tamil cinema. He also appeared in a few Bollywood films. He was introduced to Tamil film scene through the film, Thooral Ninnu Pochu. Since then he has played brief and noted character roles for more than 350 Tamil films. He shot to fame after playing the popular role of “Prabha Wineshop Owner” and known for those hilarious comedy scenes with popular Tamil comedian Vadivelu. He passed away in 2015 following kidney failure and age related diseases. He was aged 74. Though he stayed in Tamil cinema for more than three decades since early 1980s, he received only a few noted roles throughout his career.

 

He was given the first break to movies by K. Bhagyaraj. He made his film debut with Thooral Ninnu Pochu in the year 1982. The movie starred K. Bhagyaraj and Sulakshana in the lead roles. Since then he has played brief roles in Tamil cinema, apart from a few Bollywood roles. He played character roles in Bollywood films – Khakee (2004) starring Big B, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai and the National award winning film - The Legend of Bhagat Singh in 2002 starring Ajay Devgan.

 

In Tamil cinema, he frequently shared screen space with Vivek and Vadivelu, the popular comedians. He is best known for the scene as “Prabha Wineshop Owner”. He lived a simple life and always remained away from spotlight. Towards the end of his career he appeared in lesser number of movies. He died on 7th February, 2015, due to kidney failure. His last rituals were performed at Vadapalani. He was married and had four children – two sons and two daughters.
