Chaudhary Devi Lal Biography

Chaudhary Devi Lal was a prominent politician and Chief Minister of Haryana twice. He has also served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1989–91 under Indian prime ministers, V. P. Singh and Chandra Shekhar. His son Om Prakash Chautala is also a prominent politician of Haryana who holds the record of 5 times Chief Minister of the state. Till 1971 he was associated with Indian National Congress and later associated with Janata Party. After independence, Devi Lal emerged as a leader of farmers and during his tenures as chief minister he has done many reforms in the state which proved beneficial to the farmers.

 

He was born in Teja Khera village of Sirsa district in the year 1914 as Devi Dayal. He was born to Lekh Ram Sihag and Shugna Devi. His father was a wealthy Jat landlord. He discontinued his studies hearing to the wakeup call of Gandhiji for Indian freedom struggle movement. His elder brother Sahib Ram too did the same. In 1930 he was sent to one-year rigorous imprisonment by British government. He became the delegate of All-India Congress Committee in the year 1938. He was also arrested during Quit India Movement for his participation. Though Chhotu Ram, the then Revenue Minister wooed he and his brother to join the Unionist Party, they decided to stay with Congress.

 

After Independence, he emerged as a prominent leader of farmers. He has also played his part in the formation of independent Haryana state. In 1958 he got elected from Sirsa constituency. He left Congress in 1971 and got elected Rori constituency in 1974. The following year he got jailed along with other opposition leaders during Emergency period. He got elected from Janata Dal in 1977 and became the Chief Minister of Haryana. He was an MP during 1980-1982 and served in State assembly during 1982-1987. Lok Dal and Nyaya Yuddh started by him made him a hugely popular leader.
