Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Biography

Chaudhary Brahm Prakash was a freedom fighter and politician from Delhi, who served as the first chief minister of Delhi. His ancestors originally belong to UP. He was regarded as an ace politician and parliamentarian in the post-independent era. He served as the first chief minister of Delhi during the period 1952-55. As a parliamentarian he also served as a cabinet minister of Jawaharlal Nehru’s government. He served as Minister in charge of Planning and Development. His daughter-in-law Rita Chaudhary is a businesswoman and granddaughter Ekta Chowdhry is a successful model, who won Femina Miss India Universe Title in the year 2009. Chaudhary was associated with Indian National Congress.

 

He was born in 1918 in Shakurpur village of Delhi. He was associated with freedom struggle movement, and has been arrestd and jailed several times. He played an important role Satyagraha Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi in 1940. He went underground during Quit India Movement in 1942, and was fully active as a freedom fighter during this time. Born into a yadav dominated village, in the post-independent period he represented Yadav community. As a parliamentarian and cabinet minister he earned accolades. His contributions to the field of Food, Agriculture, Irrigation and Cooperatives are worth praising.

 

Before Indian independence he started organizing villages of Delhi to form co-operative societies, a move he initiated in the year 1945. He also propagated the concept of Panchayati Raj, thus playing a significant role in rural development. He also organized weaker sections for a better future. Brahm Prakash was a true patriot and an outstanding statesman, who dreamt of a fully-developed Delhi which include schools, colleges, hospitals, roads, primary health centres, drinking water facilities, electricity supply etc. He passed away in 1993. Known as a champion of the cause of Dalits in the country, a commemorative postage stamp on Chaudhary Brahm Prakash was released by Minister of Communications, Ram Vilas Paswan in 2001.
