Charuhasan Biography

Charuhasan is a National award winning Indian actor who appears most in Tamil movies. He is the elder brother of Kamal Haasan, one of the greatest names of Indian cinema at present. His daughter Suhasini is also one of the great names among the actresses of 1980’s and she is married to film maker Mani Ratnam. These four personalities have won National awards and thus Charuhasan, Kamal Haasan and Suhasini together form a unique trio of Indian actors within a single family to won National awards for best actor/actress. He won Best Actor Award for the Kannada movie Tabarana Kathe, released in the year 1987. He also received state award for the same role.

 

Charuhasan was born in Paramakudi (Tamil Nadu) in 1930. He was basically an introvert and kept himself away from school functions and activities. He couldn’t complete schooling from schools and he completed it with the help of a tutor. He was taken to fifth class after that. He was an average student too and cleared the exams with minimum marks. Before entering movies, he was practising as a lawyer. It was just a co-incidence that he entered movies. It happened at Ooty with the Tamil movie, `Udiripookal', directed by Mahendran. Though he was not at all serious in acting, he was offered a second film. It was for a Kannada movie, `Thabarina Katha'. Surprisingly this movie gave him a national award. After that he stayed in film field and worked in all south Indian languages.  

 

He has done both positive and negative roles in movies. He has handled both saint and ghost roles as well. He has worked as father, grandfather and uncle. A few of his noted Malayalam movies include – Ayushkaalam, Adharvam, Gandhari and Vachanam.  A few of his Tamil movies include - Nenjathai Killathe, Moondru Mugam, Veera, Dil, Thalapathi and Jai hind. He worked with his son-in-law Maniratnam in the movie, Thalapathi.
