Charmila Biography

Charmila is a south Indian actress most active during the decade of 1990’s. Though she concentrated most on Malayalam movies, she has acted in other south Indian languages as well, in lead roles. Later she appeared in a few B grade movies, alongside actor Shankar also. She debut Malayalam cinema with Mohanlal-Murali starrer Dhanam in the year 1991. Before that, she has appeared in Tamil movie Oliyattam also. An innocent girl singing the catchy song, “Cheera poovukalkkumma kodukkana” was approved by audience and very soon she became one of the top heroines of the list. She became equally popular in traditional Kerala girl looks as well as modern looks and her innocent smile and pleasant looks appealed millions of fans all around.

In 1991, she played lead role opposite Jayaram in Keli. This movie marked Charmila as a talented actress of Mollywood. For the second time, she played opposite Mohanlal in Uncle Bun. Her other releases in the debut year include Pranadatha – her Telugu debut movie also. It was a time when Jagdeesh used to play supporting comic roles as well as leading hero roles. In 1992, successful movie, Priyapetta Kukku was released, where Charmila was paired opposite Jagdeesh. In 1993, her big release was Kabooliwalah, directed by Siddique-Lal where she was paired opposite Vineeth.

During 1994-1995, she was paired opposite Babu Antony (hero cum villain) in numerous movies and the Jodi became successful too. The movies include – Kadal, Kambolam, Rajadhani, Arabia, Rajakeeyam and Special squad. It developed love in her heart towards her co-actor. But Babu Antony rejected her marriage proposal. There were rumours that heartbroken Charmila attempted suicide. However, her career noticed a downfall and very soon she was out of the race. A few more movies need special mention – Peter Scott, Adivaram, Manikyakoodaram, Arjunan Pillayum Anchu Makkalum, Jagathi Jagathish In Town and Gajaraja Manthram.
