Charan Das Mahant Biography

Charan Das Mahant is an Indian politician and parliamentarian from Chhatisgarh associated with Indian National Congress. He is the son of Bisahu Das Mahant, former congress politician and MLA from Champa. Charan Das served as the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. He currently serves as an MP representing Korba constituency. He was the only Congress Member of Parliament from Chhattisgarh in 2009 general elections. Mahant is also an author who has published three books. He believes in the uplift of tribal sectors of the society for the development of India.

 

He was born in Saragaon of Janjgir Champa district, Chhatisgarh. He was born into a political family associated with Indian National Congress. His father Bisahu Das Mahant was a senior politician associated with state politics. Charan das completed his education from Bhopal. He holds M.Sc., M.A., LL.B. and Ph. D degrees. He is an agriculturalist by profession, now active in politics. Painting, music, sports, reading and travelling are his hobbies. He is married to Social Activist, Jyotsna Mahant and has four children.

 

Mahant began his active career in politics in the 1980s. He was active in state politics during this time. He joined Madhya Pradesh state assembly for the first time in 1980 and retained the seat in 1985 state elections too. He served as the Minister of Agriculture of Madhya Pradesh during 1988-1989. He rose to a senior leader in state politics in the 1990s. He holds the portfolio - Department of Commercial Tax (Independent) during 1993-1995, after being elected as MLA for the third term. He served as the minister of Home Affairs and Public Relations during 1995-1998.

 

He entered Lok Sabha for the first time in 1998 Lok Sabha elections. In 1999, he was re-elected for the second term to the 13th Lok Sabha. He later got re-elected in 2009 and 2014 general elections too. He currently represents Korba Constituency.
