Chandra Shekhar Biography

Chandra Shekhar was the eighth Prime Minister of India who was in office from 10th November 1990 to 21st June 1991. He was born on 1 July 1927 in Ibrahimpatti in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh in a Rajput family. He was preceded by Vishwanath Pratap Singh and succeeded by Narasimha Rao. He also served as the Minister of Defense and Minister of Home Affairs.

He studied Master of Arts at Allahabad University and was a prominent figure in students’ politics. After his graduation he took active part in socialist politics. He was influenced by Acharya Narendra Dev. From 1962 to 1967 he served as the member of Rajya Sabha. He undertook the nationwide Padayatrai in 1984 to know the country better and he was then called as a Young Turk.

He joined Congress in 1964 and entered Lok Sabha in 1977. He criticized Indira Gandhi for her activities and this led to a split in Congress in the year 1975. He was arrested and jailed during emergency period. Then he became the President of Janata Party and in 1988 the party merged with other parties and formed the government under the leadership of V. P. Singh. He became Prime Minister of India in November 1990.

There was a break away in the Janata Dal when V. P. Singh resigned his position. New party called Samajwadi Janata Party was formed. The Indian National Congress decided to support the government from outside to prevent snap elections. Chandra Shekhar could barely get majority with the support of both Congress and BJP. The Congress party accused him of spying on Rajiv Gandhi and so the relationship crumbled quickly. He had only 60 MPs to support him and so he resigned on 6th March 1991. However until the next elections were held he remained in office.

He led Samajwadi Janata Party and has won eight times from Ballia constituency in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Only in 1984, he lost to Mr. Jagganath Chaudhary of Congress. He suffered from a form of cancer of the plasma cells and died on 8th July 2007 at his age of 80.
