Chaman Lal Chaman Biography

Chaman Lal Chaman is a noted Punjabi poet, lyricist and radio broadcaster, who currently resides in London. He is the lyricist of Punjabi song, saun da mahina, sung by Jagjit Singh in 1979. He has also penned lyrics of numerous songs for Jagjit Singh and his wife Chitra Singh. Asha Bhosle, Kumar Sanu and Sonu Nigam are other singers for whom Chaman has written songs. He writes in Hindi and Urdu languages. He worked as a radio presenter in Kenya and Britain and has interviewed many Indian film celebrities as well as India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was presented with Asian Achievers Gold Award for his achievements at London in 2010.

 

Chaman was born in a small village Pasla of Jalandhar of present Punjab. He lost his mother at a younger age and his father took him to Kenya where he was working as a radio presenter for The Voice of Kenya, in Nairobi. Chaman worked for Kenyan radio for 18 years, from 1956 to 1974. He interviewed Bollywood actor Sunil Dutt when he visited Kenya. After spending 18 years with Kenya radio, he moved to Britain and worked at the Asian service of BBC and Punjab Radio, UK. He started the first Indian commercial radio programme in London called Geetmala. During 1990’s, he anchored weekly programmes on BBC's TV One and BBC Radio Four.

 

His literary career started at the age of 13, when he wrote a poem on Guru Nanak Dev's birthday. He received one rupee as its award which encouraged him to write more. Till now he has published 3 poetry collections. On the 50th anniversary of Indian independence, he penned a play, Sare Jahan Se Achha and worked alongside Balwant Gargi and Jagjit Singh which was a major success in London.
