C. V. Sreeraman Biography

C. V. Sreeraman was a noted novelist and short story writer from Kerala. He was the Vice Chairman of Kerala Sahitya Akademi. His themes were well noted and his most famous short story works are Anayasena Maranam and Railway Palangal. He has won the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy Award in 1999 for his collection of short stories Sreeramante Kadhakal and Kerala Sahitya Academy Award for the collection Vasthuhara. His works have always attracted directors of parallel cinema and a few of them have been projected to big screen winning numerous state awards and national awards. Vasthuhara, Ponthan Mada, Chidambaram and Purushartham are quite a few instances. Sreeraman died on October 10, 2007 at a private hospital in Thrissur suffering from liver and renal problems.

 

Sreeraman was born on February 7, 1933, at Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur as the son of Velappan and Janaki. He spent a part of his childhood in Sri Lanka. He did his schooling at Government High School, Kunnamkulam and T.M. H. S., Perumbilavu. His college days were spent at St. Thomas College, Thrissur and St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. He took degree in law from the Madras Law College and worked in the Rehabilitation Department of the Andaman and Nicobar islands for seven years. Many of the themes of his works have been inspired from his seven year experience at Andaman and Nicobar islands. He has been associated with Communist party during his college days and has also served as Chovvanur panchayat president for seven years. He was a member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Executive Committee from 1988 to 1991.

 

His noted works include Puthuma Illathavarude Nagaram, Puramkazhchakal, Vasthuhara, Chidambaram, Dukhitarude Dukham, Chakshu Sravanagalasthamam, Kshurasyadhara, Theerthakkavadi and Entosy Valiamma. Most of his works have been translated to several languages including Hindi and English.
