C. Sankaran Nair Biography

C. Sankaran Nair was the President of the Indian National Congress in 1897 held at Amraoti, the only Keralite to hold the post. He was born in Malabar coast of Kerala, started his career as as a lawyer in 1880 in the High Court of Madras and later became one of the prominent figures of Indian National Congress. He was knighted in the year 1904 by British government. He died in 1934.

 

He was born on July 11, 1857 on the Malabar Coast (North Kerala). His school education was done at a local school of his native place. Later he passed the Arts examination with a first class from the Provincial School at Kozhikode. He became graduated in arts from Presidency College, Chennai in the year 1877 and completed Bachelor in Law two years later. Nair started as a lawyer in 1880 in the High Court of Madras. In 1884, the Madras Government appointed him as a member of the Committee for an enquiry into the state of Malabar. In 1902, the Viceroy Lord Curzon appointed him Secretary to the Raleigh University Commission and later he was appointed a Companion of the Indian Empire by the King-Emperor in 1904. Till 1908, he served as the Advocate-General to the Government and an Acting Judge. In 1908, he became a permanent Judge in the High Court of Madras and held the post till 1915.

 

In 1904, he was knighted in recognition of his services. He became a member of the Viceroy's Council in 1915 with the charge of the Education portfolio. But in 1919, he openly pointed out defects in the British government by writing two famous Minutes of Dissent in the Despatches on Indian Constitutional Reforms. British government accepted most of his recommendations. Later he participated in Indian freedom struggle movement and in 1897 he presided over First Provincial Conference met in Chennai. The same year, he was chosen as the President of Indian national congress. In 1928, he was the President of the Indian Central Committee to co-operate with the Simon Commission. Major General, Kunhiraman Palat Candeth is his grandson.
