Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Biography

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is an Indian politician and one of the members of the politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. For the past 24 years, he had been the MLA of Jadavpur constituency and he was defeated in the 2011 Assembly Election of West Bengal by Manish Gupta in his own constituency.

 

He was born on 1st March 1944 in North Calcutta. He belongs to the family of the revolutionary poet, Sukanta Battacharya. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee studied at Sailendra Sirkar Vidyalaya. Then he got his graduation in Bengali literature at Presidency College in Kolkata. He joined CPI (M) as its member. He supported Vietnam’s cause in 1968. He became the state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation. This was the youth wing of the CPI (M) party and was later merged into the Democratic Youth Federation of India.

 

He was elected as the member of the Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1977 from Cossipore constituency. For the first time in history, CPI (M) together with Left Front came to power in West Bengal. He became the Minister of information and culture. He lost in the assembly election 1982 from Cossipore. Then in 1987 election he was selected from Jadavpur constituency.

 

He is an avid traveler and has toured many parts of the world such as Soviet Union, Cuba, Vietnam, France, Great Britain and Singapore. H e married Meera and has one daughter Suchetana. He refused to move to the residence of Chief Minister and continued to live in the one bed room lower income group government quarters at Palm Avenue in Kolkata. He is considered to be an alternative to Jyoti Basu since 1996. He was promoted to the position of Chief Minister when Basu stepped down in 2000.

 

His clean image is his biggest asset. He risked industrializing the state where agriculture is the main source of income. Many industries were started in West Bengal due to his efforts. This effort led to his defeat by Trinamool Congress candidate Manish Gupta in 2011 Assembly elections ending his regime.
