Brijmohan Lall Munjal Biography

Brijmohan Lall Munjal is an Indian businessman and the chairman of Hero Group. He is one of the richest persons of the world. Hero Cycles and Hero MotoCorp work under the flagship of Hero group. He was awarded Businessman of the Year in 1994 by business magazine "Business India" and also received National Award for outstanding contribution to the Development of Indian Small Scale Industry in 1995. Throughout his business career, he has played a major role in spreading the Hero Group as one of the prominent vehicle manufacturing organizations of the country. He has received numerous business awards for his outstanding contributions to private sector business of India.  

 

Brijmohan Lall Munjal was born in 1923 at Kamalia of non-partitioned Punjab, British India, now a part of Pakistan. He was born in a simple middle class family. After completing his formal education he worked at the Army Ordnance Factory. He moved to India just before Indian Partition. He, along with his family settled in Amritsar, in 1944 when Brij was 20. The brothers initially started a business by supplying components to manufacturers of bicycles. After India partition, the family permanently shifted to Ludhiana. Still now, Ludiana is a major hub of the production of components of bicycles. Slowly the Mumnjal brothers expanded their distribution network and by early 1950s, they started distributing cycle parts throughout India.

 

In 1954, they shifted the business from supplying to manufacturing. They started manufacturing handlebars, front forks and chains. In 1956, Munjal brothers own a bid to manufacture cycles in Ludiana. By this time, Hero Cycles was registered as a large-scale industrial unit and capital was partially provided by Punjab government.  Before entering into a joint venture with Honda Motors, Dr. Munjal started the Majestic Auto Limited and started manufacturing Hero Majestic Moped. In 1984 the Hero Group started a joint venture with Hero Honda and established a plant at Haryana. Later the industry was named Hero MotoCorp Ltd. But it was separated in 2011 and all settlements with Japanese company were done in 2013.
