Braja Sundar Mitra Biography 
Braja Sundar Mitra was a social reformer and founder of Dhaka Brahmo Samaj and Brahmo Samaj at Comilla. As a social activist, he opposed polygamy and consumption of liquor. He supported women’s education and remarriage of widows. He lived during the period of 1227-1282 according to Bengali calendar.
Braja Sundar Mitra was born in Dhakka of British Bengal. He lost his father at a young age. Hence he started working early to save money for his education. Tattwabodhini Patrika started by Debendranath Tagore inspired him a lot and inspired a number of other young men to set up a Brahmo Samaj in Dhaka in 1846. Their gatherings used to regularly read Brahmastrotra, a sort of divinity. It deeply affected his soul and he succeeded in attracting a pretty large number of followers, including educated government employees. But they have to conflict with the conservative society also who believed in traditional Hindu principles. His guardian and protector expelled him.
When Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar raised the storm of widow remarriage, Mitra supported him. He printed copies of his books at his own cost and circulated them widely amongst the people of East Bengal, to create awareness among people. He along with Durga Mohan Das is regarded as true messengers from Bengal who strived to gather support from society for widow remarriages. After his transfer to Comilla, he continued with the activities of the Brahmo Samaj. He bought a house in Armeniatola and lent out a part of it for the activities of the Samaj.
Aghore Nath Gupta and Vijay Krishna Goswami powerfully preached the principles of Brahmos at newly opened Brahma Samaj at Dhakka. Debendranath was deeply impressed by Braja’s work in East Bengal. Brahmo reformer, Deba Prasad Mitra was his grandson.
