Bombay Lakshmi Rajagopalan Biography

Bombay Lakshmi Rajagopalan is a leading Carnatic vocalist from Matunga and one among the popular Matunga sisters from Mumbai. Throughout her singing career, she has won numerous prizes including Music Academy, Chennai, “Gold Medal” and prestigious Tambura prizes at Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts" Mumbai and Sri Swathi Thirunal Kalakshetra, Mumbai. “Asthana Vidhushi” and “Sangeeta Visharada” by Jagadguru Sankaracharya of Bhadri Sakatapuram Sreevidya Peetam and “Sangeeta Sevamani” by Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Peetam are the major titles received by Bombay Lakshmi Rajagopalan. She is an ‘A’ Grade artist of All India Radio & Doordarshan Kendra.

 

Lakshmi was born in Mumbai on 12 March 1959 at Matunga, Mumbai to T. V. Panchapakesan and Radha. She has 4 sisters and all are famous in classical music. Lakshmi started learning music at the age of 3 from her parents. After graduation in Commerce and C.A.I.I.B from Mumbai University, she did 5-year music course at Bharatiya Music & Fine Arts at Mumbai. Later she learnt from Smt T.R. Balamani. She started singing public at a younger age and at the age of 8 she received a prize from M. S. Subbulakshmi.

 

She is an ‘A’ Grade artist of All India Radio & Doordarshan Kendra and she performs regularly at popular concerts in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. She has sung in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and Sanskrit languages. Her audio releases are Kanchi Sankara, Devi Saranam and Carnatic Classical. Lakshmi has also appeared in television programs as a vocalist of which “Suprapadam” on Asianet (2005) and “Vanakkam Tamizhagam” on Jaya TV (2007) need special mention. She has also performed at Brahmotsavam in Tirupati on October 2, 2008. Chembai Sangeeta Utsavam on Guruvayur Ekadasi Day, Thyagaraja Utsavam at Tirupati and Bharatiya Music & Fine Arts, Matunga are a few more.
