Bombay Jayashri Biography

Jayashri Ramnath popularly known as Bombay Jayashri is an Indian Carnatic music vocalist and playback singer of Indian cinema, particularly Tamil movies. She is the favourite of famous music director, Harris Jayaraj with whom she sung chartbuster Tamil songs like – Vaseegara of Minnale and Ondra Renda of Kakka Kakka. She sang its Hindi versions too, for the same music director – Zara Zara of Rehna hai tere dil mein and the song, Chahoon Bhi toh from the movie ‘Force’, though she sang fresh. She has sung for other south Indian languages as well. Her playback singing for Bollywood movie, ‘Morning Raga’ in classical music made her a national figure.

 

Most recently she has been in controversy when Irayimman Thampi trust accused her for copying the first eight lines from the most popular lullaby of Malayalam, “Omana thingal kidavo” written by Iriyimman Thampi for His Highness Swathi Tirunal and using it for the Oscar winning movie – Life of Pie. Though she was able to win Academy nomination for this composition, she remained in news for this controversy. Jayashri had rendered 'Omanathinkal Kidavo' Malayalam version back in 2001 in her album 'Vatsalyam'.

 

Jayashri was born in a musical family from Kolkata. But she was brought up in Mumbai. She started training in Carnatic music under the guidance of her parents Seetha and N. N. Subramaniam and later from T. R. Balamani under whom she trained for 10 years. She was a disciple of violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman also. She learnt veena from G. N. Dhandapani Iyer and Hindustani vocal music from Mahavir Jaipurvale and Ajay Pohankar. Jayashri performed her first concert in 1982 and till now she has performed in various parts of India as well as abroad. Jayashri's jugalbandis with Ronu Majumdar and Shubha Mudgal are most popular. Apart from playback singing, she has also composed music for a few movies like - Verukku Neer and Kerala Cafe.
