Biswajit Biography

Biswajit Chatterjee, fondly known as Biswajit is a popular actor of Hindi and Bengali movies. He has an image of a romantic hero and possesses good looks too. Songs of his movies are lovely pictured and though he has acted only a few movies in Bollywood, fans still remember him for those few movies that were big box office hits. He has also handled suspense thrillers as well as mysterious stories. Among his Bollywood movies, 20 Saal baad, Shehanai, Night in London, Jaal, Kismat, Kohra, Mere sanam, April Fool and Do Kaliyan are still remembered most. He has been successfully paired with Asha Parekh and Waheeda Rehman during 60’s in many movies. His movies always retained some sort of suspense that’s decoded only at the climax, most of them were action-romantic-thrillers too.

 

‘Aao husoor tumko’ and ‘Yeh hai reshmi sulfom ka anderi’ – two mesmerizing numbers of Asha Bhosle O.P.Nayyar combination are remembered for its striking similarities in singing styles and raga chosen. Biswajit is the hero of both these songs. His other Hindi hits include - Dhoop Chhaya, Tamanna, Pardesi,  Mein sundar hoon, Sriman Prithviraj, Pyar Ka Sapna, Vasna, Ishq par zor nahi, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, Ghar ka chirag, Shararat, Nai roshni, Do dil, Biwi Aur Makaa, Kaise kahoon, Bin Badal Barsaat and Asra.     

 

Biswajit was born in Kolkata, but later moved to Mumbai to get opportunities in Bollywood. Mayamrigo (1960) and Dui Bhai (1961) are a couple of Bengali movies that he did before he moved to Mumbai. He has been in a midst of controversies related to Rekha’s debut movie Anjana Safar (1969). It was a time when French kiss was a taboo in Indian cinema and as Rekha was a new actress to Bollywood, they tricked her to shoot a kissing scene for the movie. Somehow, that picture got published in Time magazine and brought a lot of protests. Finally censor board halted its release for one decade and later got released in 1979 titled ‘Do Shikari’.

 

In between Biswajit did a few Bengali movies during 70’s as well - Chowringhee and Srimaan Prithviraj. Retaining the original star cast of Anjana Safar, he produced and directed a movie in 1975 – Kehta hai mujhko raja. About his personal life – He has married thrice and now he is living in Bengal in the midst of financial troubles. Son born from his first marriage Prasenjit, is a top hero of Bengal at present.
