Birendra Nath Datta Biography

Birendra Nath Datta is a researcher of folklore, lyricist and singer from Assam. He has worked as a professor in various colleges across the state. He was honoured with Padma Shri in the year 2009 for his outstanding contributions to the field of Literature and Education. He is a recipient of Jagaddhatri-Harmohan Das Literary award for the year 2010. He received the award for his book - Sankar Madhavar Manisha Aru Asomar Sanaskritic Uttaradhikar. He has formerly served as the president of Asom Sahitya Sabha for two sections. Cultural Contours of Northeast India is another scholarly book authored by him. He also owns a music career. He is a noted lyricist and singer as well.

 

Datta was born in 1 March 1935 at Nagaon, Assam. His father was a school teacher. His family originally belongs to Panara village. Datta was an excellent student during his academic studies. He completed graduation in arts from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. Later he completed Master in Economics from Gawhati University. He started his professional career as a lecturer after that. He was the founder principal of Pramathesh Barua College at Gauripur, where he served for many years. In 1974, he obtained his Ph.D degree in folklore and he joined Gauhati University as a reader in the year 1979. He retired as a professor in 1995. Yet he returned to Tezpur University as a professor.

 

He is also known as a singer and lyricists of Assam. "Sou Sirish Daalat", "Aakaash Aamaak Akani Aakaash Diya ", "Monor Khobar", "Bahudin Bokulor Gondh Poa Naai", "Rohimalaa Uronir Maajere", "Sou Sirish Daalat", "Tomaar Kaarane Jaau" and "Sita Banabaash" are some of his memorable songs.
