Binoy Majumdar Biography

Binoy Majumdar was a popular Indian poet who wrote in Bengali language. He received Sahitya Academy Award in 2005, just a year before his death.  Rabindra Puraskar, Sudhindranath Dutta Puraskar and Krittibas Puraskar are the major awards received by him. Binoy has often been regarded by critics as a true successor of Jibanananda Das - one of the most prominent names after Tagore. He was one among the members of the leading literal movement in 1960s - "Hungryalist Movement". Shakti Chattopadhyay, Samir Roychoudhury and Malay Roy Choudhury are the other leading poets of this movement.

Binoy Majumdar was born in Myanmar in 1934 and later his family moved to West Bengal. He completed pre-degree from the Presidency College and graduation from Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta as a mechanical engineering graduate. But he turned to the world of literature and poetry soon after his Engineering course. Drawn towards mathematics since young, he also translated many science books the Russian to Bengali. ‘Nakshatrer Aloy’ was his first published collection of poems. But it was ‘Phire Esho, Chaka’ published in 1960 which made him an acclaimed Bengali writer. He wrote the book in the format of a diary which was widely appreciated. Till now, this work is regarded as his best one.

He was one among the young writers who joined the famous "Hungryalist Movement". But very soon he left it due to his indifferences with one of its founding members, Shakti Chattopadhyay. During 1980’s, he was affected by mental illness and he suffered the same problems throughout 1990s. Later he lived in the outskirts of Calcutta, in Thakurnagar as a stranger. He passed away in 2006.
