Bijon Bhattacharya Biography

Bijon Bhattacharya was a prominent Indian theatre and film personality from Bengal. Nabanna (Harvest), based on Bengal famine of 1943 was one of the celebrated playwrights of this artist which was later made to a feature film, Dharti Ke Lal. This play staged by Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) in 1944 under the direction of Sombhu Mitra.  He co-wrote its film script as well. It was staged in different festivals and collected lakhs of rupees for famine relief in rural Bengal. He was one of the founding fathers of the IPTA movement (IPTA), a left-leaning group of artists. He was an artist with communist ideologies.

 

His famous plays are Agun,  Nabanna, Jabanbandi, Kalanka, Mara Chand (1951), Gotrantar (1959), Lash Ghuirya Jauk, Debi Garjan (1966), Garbhabati Janani (1969), Krishnapaksha, Aj Basanta and Chalo Sagare. The Cloud-Capped Star (1960), Subarnarekha (1965) and E-Flat (1961) are his noted movies as an actor. As a film actor, his Bengali films are Tathapi (1950), Chinnamul (1950), Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960),    Komal Gandhar (1961), Kashtipathar (1964), Subarnarekha (1965), Swapna Niye (1966), Kamallata (1969), Padatik (1973), Jukti Takko Aar Gappo (1977), Bhola Moira (1977), Swati (1977) and Dooratwa (1979).  

 

He was married to great writer and Jnanpith winner, Mahasweta Devi. The couple got divorced in the year 1959. Nabarun Bhattacharya, one of the leading Bengali novelists at present is their son. When Mahasweta Devi met Bijon for the first time, she had not seen the celebrated drama, Nabanna. He was active in the Communist Party organization IPTA during that time. She was in student’s wing. It was Satyen Majumdar, a famous journalist and revolutionary who told about Bijoy to Mahasweta’s father. Thus they were introduced to each other and got married. But the marriage ended in a divorce.
