Bijay Mohanty Biography

Bijay Mohanty is a noted actor of Oriya movies as well as television. He has worked as hero, villain, comedian as well as character roles since he entered film field during middle 1970’s. He was honoured with National Award for his contribution to art and literature. In 1987, he was selected as the best actor of the decade by Orissa Cine Critics. He won state award for best actor 6 times. The movies are Arati (1981), Mamata Mage Mula (1985), Ei Aam Sansara (1986), Aam Ghara Aam Sansara (1991), Bhisma Pratijna (1993) and Bhai Hela Bhagari (1994). He has been one of the leading heroes of 1980’s and early 1990’s. He is married to Oriya film actress, Tandra Ray.

He was born in in Pandiri and brought up in Baripada, Mayurbhanj. He did his schooling from MKC High School, Baripada where he started participating in drama and stage shows. He joined the National School of Drama after degree course, where great actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar and Om Puri were his classmates. He stayed in Delhi up to 1975 and was active in theatre too. In 1977, he debut Oriya films with National award winning movie, Chilika Tire. Initially he worked as an antihero before moving to positive roles. Naga Phasa, Danda Balunga, Sahari Bagha, Samay Bada Balaban, Chaka Bhaunri and Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi are the best instances.

He joined the Drama department of the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in 1977 and retired as its professor. During last few years, he is active in television industry. A few of his noted roles include - Subhadra, Sara Akasa, Samaya Chaka, Asara Aloka, Sri Jagannath, Mahayagyan and Bidhatara Khela. He has also experimented his talent as a director with the movie, Bhuli Huena. Famous drama troupe of Baripada, Jugechha was formed by Mohanty.
