Bhupendra Kumar Datta Biography

Bhupendra Kumar Datta was a revolutionary from Bengal who fought for Indian independence against British. As a Jugantar leader, he gave significant contributions to the group and has also taken part in several relief camps as a social worker.

He was born on 8 October 1892 in Jessore of present-day Bangladesh. His father was a manager of a big estate while his mother was associated with many charity and social activities. He had 4 siblings and his mother brought them up in a devotional atmosphere. Once deeply influenced by the brahmacharya of Lakshmana of epic Ramayana, he too took vows to remain a bachelor throughout his life in service of common man. He was associated with humanity activities and loved to read the books written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Vivekananda. During his graduation at Scottish Church College he came into contact with Sachin Sanyal. Deeply influenced by his ideologies, Datta too decided to become a revolutionary.

But it was the time when Jatin was suspected from all revolutionary activities and for the same reason he couldn’t join their group. He was associated with some social service in that period and later Shashibhushan Raychaudhury, who was fondly called Shashidaa. Later he spent a few days in the company of Subhas Chandra Bose and later at the relief camp of 1913 he met some close associates of Jatin.

Bhupen passed his Intermediate Examination with good marks in 1915. Bhupen opened a hostel while studying at Sanskrit College of Kolkata. He maintained links and collected money for revolutionary purposes even after the shocking death of his leader Jatin. He was a member of Hindu–German Conspiracy. In 1917 he played a prominent role as a revolutionary leader and he got arrested the same year. He holds the record of a hunger strike for 78 days in Bilaspur Jail in December 1917.
