Bharath Gopi Biography

Bharath Gopi was one of the most versatile and gifted actors of Malayalam. Gopinathan Velayudhan Nair, popularly known as Bharath Gopi was one of the first actors to be associated with the New Wave cinema movement in Kerala that started in the middle 70’s. Among the actors of parallel cinema, Bharath Gopi’s name always comes first. He is also known as Kodiyettam Gopi because his role in the movie Kodiyettam. He began to be known as Bharath Gopi since he won National award for best actor for the movie Kodiyettam in 1977. During that name, National award winning male actors were prefixed using ‘Bharath’ and best female artist by ‘Urvashi’. Thus he came to known as Bharath Gopi, though that procedure has been withdrawn during 1980’s. He has won Kerala state awards for best actor 4 times. In 1991 Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contributions towards art and cinema.

 

Apart from Kodiyettam, his most memorable roles are – Chidambaram, Palangal, Panchavadi paalam, Appunni, Akkare, Ente Mamattikkuttiyammakku, Marmaram, Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, Kallan Pavithran, Aalolam, Vida parayum mumpe, Oru Painkili Katha, Karimpinpoovinakkare, Kaattathe kilikoodu, Agaat, Ormakai, Yavanika and Aadaminte vaariyellu. He has directed the movies - Ulsava pittennu, Ente Hridhayathinte Udama and Yamanam. Yamanam was awarded Best Film on social issues by the National Award Jury in 1991. He has produced the movie Padheyam in 1993, directed by Bharathan and it was the debut movie of actress Chippy.

 

Bharath Gopi was born on 2 November 1937 at Chirayinkeezhu, Thiruvananthapuram as the youngest son of Kochuveetil Velayudhan Pillai and Parvathyamma. After completing his degree studies from University College, Thiruvananthapuram, he joined as Lower Division Clerk in the Kerala Electricity Board. As a theatre artist, he began his career through Prasadhana Little Theatres under G. Sankara Pillai. Abhayarthikal was his debut drama. Later he involved more with theater and has also written five plays and directed three.

 

As an actor, Gopi debut through Swayamvaram in 1972, directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. He did a bit role in this movie. Actually Gopi was attracted to the industry through Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Chitralekha Film Society. In the next movie of Adoor, he was given the lead role. The movie was Kodiyettam released in 1977 and the rest is history. Gopi died on January 29, 2008 after prolonged illness. Rasathantram (2006) and De Ingottu Nokkiye (2008) are among his last releases.
