Bharat Bhushan Biography

Bharat Bhushan was a very popular actor of Bollywood during 1940’s and 1950’s. He is most noted for his performance in Baiju bawra, Barsaat ki raat, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Anand Math and Chitra Lekha.  He was the second recipient for best actor award at Filmfare and he won it for his performance in Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the year 1954.

 

Bharat Bhushan was born in 14 June 1920 Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He lost his mother when he only 2 years old. His elder brother was film producer R.Chandra and owned the studio - Ideal Studio at Lucknow. After mother’s death, both the brothers left Meerut to their grandfather’s home at Aligarh. Later Bharat Bhushan took graduation from Aligarh.

 

To join movies was against his father’s wish and he went to both Kolkata and Mumbai in search of opportunities. He married from a prominent family in Lucknow and her name was Sharadha. Sharadha died soon after delivering their second child and later Bharat Bhushan married his co-actress of the movie ‘Barsaat ki raat’ – Ratna.

 

He made a successful debut with Kidar Sharma’s Chitralekha (1941). He played the leading actor role in the movie Suhaag raat in the year 1948. He starred opposite Begam Para and Geeta Bali in this movie. But it took more than one decade to get his presence noticed. It happened with the movie Baiju Bawra. He played the role of Baiju Bawra in the movie and this movie is always regarded as one among the landmark movies ever made in Hindi cinema. It gave fresh start to the careers of the leading pair – Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari. It also give name and fame to music director Naushad and playback singer Mohd. Rafi.

 

He has a few memorable movies in his career. But after the huge success of Baiju Bawra, he was offered only singer roles and hsitoric movies only. His other major hits include – Vasant Bahar, Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh, Angulimal, Kavi Kalidas, Ghunghat and Sohni Mahwal. He has also worked a few movies under his brother’s production - Beybus, Minar, and Basant Bahar.  Bharat Bhushan was busy in Bollywood till his death. Towards the end of his career, he played character roles and was busy in the industry till 1990.

 

He was the first chocolate-faced good-looking star of Hindi films. He was a good reader and often categorized under intellectual people of the industry. He owned a big personal library too. But his last days were spent in financial troubles and he witnessed both ups and downs in his life.
