Bhanu Bharti Biography

Bhanu Bharti is a noted Indian theatre director and playwright. He is the founder-director of Aaj Rangmandal theatre group. He has done more than 70 plays in the career spanning to about 4 decades. Most of his works include choreographies with tribal and folk artists. Pashu Gayatri, Kaal Katha and Amar Beej are all based on his researches and studies of tribal rituals. Former director of NSD and eminent theater personality, Mohan Maharishi is his elder brother. His major works are Chandrama Singh urf Chamku, Ras Gandharva, Azar Ka Khwab, and Yamgatha. He received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1997 given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for his overall contributions to Indian theater.

 

Bhanu Bharti was born in 1947 in Ajmer, Rajasthan. He graduated from NSD, Delhi in 1973. He bagged the Best all round student and best director award at NSD. He continued his theatre studies at Japan where he studied traditional theatre from the University of Tokyo. He has produced more than 50 plays in the career spanning to more than 5 decades. His theatre productions based on his studies on tribal rituals make him a distinct artist. He directed a film on Gavari, the dance theatre of the Bhil.

 

In the period 1976-1978, he served as the head of Drama Department of Rajasthan University, Jaipur. Throughout his career as an academician, he taught dramatic literature, scenic design, and acting in many renowned institutions. He has also remained as faculty of prestigious NSD. Director of the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, Delhi, and Head of Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal, Udaipur are the other honorable positions held by Bharti.
