Bhanu Bandopadhyay Biography

Bhanu Bandopadhyay was a popular film actor of Bengali screen. Born as born as Samyamoy Bandyopadhyay, he was also known as Bhanu banerjee. He was worked in more than 300 movies. He was active in All India Radio as well and has performed in numerous plays of radio. He was a noted comedian of Bengali movies. His quote in the film Mashima malpo khamu, “Aunt, I want malpo” is very popular still now. His noted movies are Bhrantibilash, Basu Parivar, Share Chuattar and Pasher Bari.

 

Bandyopadhyay was born on 26 August 1920 at Bikrampur, Dhaka - present Bangladesh. His parents were Jitendranath Bandyopadhyay and Suniti Bandyopadhyay. He studied at Pogose School and St. Gregory's High School followed by Jagannath College. Then he came to Kolkata during 1940’s. He worked in Steel Control Board before entering movies. His acting career started as a standup comedian for plays. In 1943, he released his first major comic gramophone record - Dhakar Gadoane. He used to perform at parties and later moved to big venues. Success of his first record prompted him to release one record every Durga puja.

 

He debut silver screen during late 1940’s. A few of his initial roles include - Jagaran, Mandando, Barjatri, Palatak, Rupantar, Abhijog, Sharbohara, Mantramugdha, Pasher Bari, Prarthana, Bindur Chhele, Ja Hoi Na, Krishan, Tothapi, Digbhranta, Aladin O Ascharya Pradip, Kapalkundala, Jabanbondi, Basu Paribar, Darpachurna, Dwairath, Shetu, Patri Chai, Mahishashur Badh and Ratrir Tapashya. His role in Nirmal Dey's Basu Parivar (1952) gave him a big break to movies, followed by Share Chuattar the next year which attributed to make Bhanu a successful actor of Bengali cinema.

 

He played the lead roles in Jomaloyer Jibonto Manus, Personal Assistant, Miss Priyambada and Ashite Asio na. Bandyopadhyay founded his own Jatra group called Mukto Mancha, in which he worked as a producer, director and actor. A few of his comic records include - Cinema Bibhrat, Hanumaner Nagar Darshan, Lord bhanu, Babhharambhe Loghukria, Kartababur Deshbhraman and Bhanushharananda.
