Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Biography

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was a politician and former chief minister of Rajasthan belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the first non-congress chief minister of Rajasthan. He has also associated with Janata Dal and Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He was the 11th Vice-President of India, and served the term during the period, 2002-2007. He assigned the power of Vice President following the death of Krishan Kant. However he lost the presidential election to Pratibha Patil in 2007. He served as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan three times, from 1977 to 1980, 1990 to 1992 and 1993 to 1998. He is often referred to as "Rajasthan ka ek hi Singh" and “Babosa”.

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat entered politics in 1952 where he won state assembly elections and became MLA from Ramgarh. Later he has got elected to state assembly several times, serving as MLA from Siri Madhopur in 1957 and from Kisan Pol in 1962 & 1967. However he lost state assembly elections in 1972. The following year he was elected to Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. During the emergency period he was arrested and got released two years later. In 1977 he became MLA from Chabda as Janata Party candidate and became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Rajasthan. In 1980 the government was dismissed by Indira Gandhi.

He joined hands with BJP same year and got elected as MLA from Chabda constituency. He remained as the leader of opposition. He came to power for the second time in 1989, as an alliance formed with BJP and Janata Dal. He got elected as MLA is the succeeding terms as well. He won Vice President of India position in 2002 beating opposition candidate, Sushil Kumar Shinde.
