Bhagya Shree Biography

Bhagya Shree can be counted one among the ‘one-hit wonders of Bollywood’, who has created great impact on Indian screen and left a signature that can never be imitated by someone else. She is one among those actors who have done only a few movies that can be counted in finger tips, produced a few memorable roles, yet couldn’t sustain in the competitive world with their contemporaries. She is still remembered for the magical romantic and family entertainer – Maine pyar kiya opposite Salman Khan. Indian audience accepted her as the next door heroine and loved her innocent looks too. Every critic predicted that she will have a wonderful journey in Bollywood ahead. But it didn’t happen and she failed in delivering hits thereafter.

Her entry to acting field was just co-incidence. When the famous actor – director Amol Palekar came to her neighbourhood, he spotted her and casted in his Doordarshan serial. She was signed when already casted actress left the role and the serial became successful too. Her roles in tele serials - Honi Anhoni and Kisse Miya Biwi Ke were successful too, thus giving her direct entry to Bollywood in the late 90’s.

Sooraj Bharjathiya casted her as his heroine in his debutant movie Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). This movie marked the beginning of two actors of Bollywood – Salman Khan and Bhagya Shree similar to Aamir Khan and Juhi, one year earlier through QSQT. Both these movies were considered as trend settlers of 90’s – story line, music as well as era of sweet romance onscreen. She is still remembered for the lovely Ram Laxman numbers sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Dil deewana, Kaboothar jaa, Mein ladki hoon and Aaj syam hone aayi captured her beauty and simplicity with perfection and these songs played a significant role in the success of the movie too.

But she gave less preference to movies and acted in only a few flops thus placing herself in ‘One hit wonder’ tag. Movies were Quaid mein hai bulbul, Tyaagi, Payal and Ghar aaya mere pardesi – none of them proved successful. She got married and quit from the industry though had done some special appearance roles in the movies like Red alert, Janani etc. Only one movie needs special mention of her comeback – Maa Santhoshi Maa.
