Bhagwati Charan Vohra Biography

Bhagwati Charan Vohra was an Indian revolutionary, associated with Indian freedom struggle movement and Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He was also known as an excellent orator and event organizer. He was married to revolutionary and freedom fighter, Durgawati Devi, popularly known as Bhabhi. He was associated with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev in the activities as an activist and used to prepare bombs for their purposes. He died while testing a bomb on 28 May 1930 at the age of only 25.

 

He was born in Lahore in 1904. But his family was of Gujarat origin. His father worked in railways. He married Durgawati Devi at a younger age. He joined freedom struggle movement while studying at college in the early 1920s. Later he completed graduation from Lahore and it was during his studies in Lahore, he got attached with revolutionary movement. He played a key role in infusing intellectual ideology in the organizations he worked with. In 1926 he became the general secretary of Naujawan Bharat Sabha, with the motto "service, suffering, sacrifice".

 

Later he prepared bombs for many activist movements of the group including the one at Central Assembly Hall by Roshan Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt. He planned and prepared bomb to kill Viceroy Lord Irwin, while he was travelling from Delhi and Agra. But the Viceroy had a narrow escape though it was executed fine. Following the Lahore Conspiracy Case, Roshan Singh and his associates got arrested by British and to rescue then, Vohra attempted to prepare a bomb. However the bomb got blasted while testing and seriously injured Vohra died at the age of only 25.
