Bhagat Singh was an Indian freedom fighter and martyr who laid his life for the cause of Indian freedom. He is called as Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He was born on 28th September 1907 in Khatkar Kalam Lyallpur in Punjab in British India. His ancestral village Khatkar Kalan is now named as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.

His grandfather Arjun Singh was a reformist following Arya Samaj. He studied at Dayanand Anglo Vedic High School run by Arya Samaj. He started to follow the non-cooperation movement of Gandhiji at his age of 13. He joined Young Revolutionary Movement. He studied at National College in Lahore and ran away from home to escape early marriage.

He joined Hindustan Republican Association introduced to him by his professor Vidyalankar. He was arrested for the Dasara Bomb Case on 29th May 1927 and released after five weeks. He was writing for Punjabi newspapers at that time. He met many revolutionaries in September 1928 under the banner of Kirti Kissan Party.

When Lala Lajpat Rai protested against the Simon Commission on 20th October 1928, he was beaten with lathi by the superintendent of police J. A. Scott. Bhagat Singh wanted to take revenge for this by killing Scott and he planned this with Rajguru, Sukhdev Thapar, Jai Gopal and Chandrashekhar Azad. Gopal agreed to identify Scott and Singh should shoot him. However, he misidentified John P. Saunders, the assistant superintendent of police and he was shot to dead along with the constable Chanan Singh on 17th December 1928 by Bhagat Singh. He made a dramatic escape to Lucknow dressing in western style.

He threw bomb at the Central Legislative Assembly on 8th April 1929 shouting Inquilab Zindabad! and he and Dutt were arrested. They were sentenced to be transported for life for bombing on 12th June 1929. When Lahore Bomb Factory was discovered by police on 15th April 1929 the members of HSRA turned informants and disclosed his association with the murder of J. P. Saunders.

Many movies like Shaheed, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Rang De Basanti, etc. were produced to capture the moments of his revolutionary life.
