Beni Madhab Das Biography

Beni Madhab Das was an erudite Bengali scholar and a renowned teacher. He was a great patriot from Bengal. Among his prominent students include the revolutionary leader Subhas Chandra Bose and Das taught him at Ravenshaw Collegiate School. He was regarded as an ideal teacher and many of his students have later decorated notable positions of Bengal society. He presided over the All-India Theistic Conference at Kakinada in 1923 and his presidential speech was later published in a booklet entitled ‘Modern Theistic Movement in India’. ‘Pilgrimage through Prayers’ is his collection of essays and is regarded as a valuable asset.

 

He was born in 1866 in Sarowatoli, Chittagong. He took Master’s in Philosophy and started his career as a teacher at Chittagong College. He has been one among the prominent professors of the college who converted it into a model institution. He has also served as a college professor at different colleges of Dhaka, Cuttack, Krishna nagar and Kolkata. He joined Brahmo Samaj during his early days and he was deeply influenced by Keshub Chandra Sen. He was associated with its publications too. He married daughter of Madhusudan Sen, secretary of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. The couple had two daughters. Kalyani Das was a social activist and Bina Das, a revolutionary.

 

He left an inedible mark in the mind of his young Subhas Chandra Bose while he served as Headmaster of Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack. Bose acknowledged it in his book Bharat Pathik. He dedicated his most time for Brahmo samaj and for teaching. He is also known as a social reformer. He died in 1952 at the age of 85.
