Basil Joseph Biography

Basil Joseph is a promising young film director of Malayalam cinema who made his film debut through the comedy film – Kunjiramayanam in 2015, which emerged as a sleeper hit. The movie starred Vineeth Sreenivasan, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Aju Varghese, Biju Menon and Sneha Unnikrishnan in lead roles. Prior to his Mollywood debut he has directed and acted in a few short films. He has worked as an assistant director of Vineeth Sreenivasan for the movie Thira and later worked with him for his debut flick as a director. Both the movies starred Vineeth’s younger brother Dhyan in the lead role. One of the youngest Malayalam directors at present, he made his debut movie at the age of only 25.

Basil was born in Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad on 28 April 1990. He started his career as an actor for a few short films before moving behind the camera. He made his first appearance in front of the camera for the 2012 short film - CET Life and slowly moved to screenplay and direction of short films. Spending a couple of years in association with short films - Shhh..., Priyamvadha Katharayano, Pakalukalude Rani and Oru Thundu Padam in the role of writer, actor and director, he joined the versatile Vineeth Sreenivasan’s team as an assistant director in 2013. With Kunjiramayanam in 2015, he made his successful debut as a film director. In 2014, he made a brief role in the movie - Homely Meals. He worked as an IT professional in Technopark for a short period before switching to the entertainment field.

Basil has always been a film buff and taught himself the basics of filmmaking from online tutorials. He graduated from the prestigious College of Engineering (CET), Thiruvananthapuram. Shh – was his first short film. The seven-minute short film earned him a lot of appreciation and encouragement from his friends and that’s how he slowly moved to film making. His second short film - Priyamvadha Katharayano, a comic one was based on a short story written by Arun Kayamkulam on his popular blog.
