Bashar Nawaz Biography

Bashar Nawaz was a popular Urdu poet, who has penned lyrics for a few Bollywood movies as well. As a lyricist he is best known for his songs for the highly appreciated film – Baazar (1982). Its ghazals are indeed popular even now. He penned two songs for the film which became extremely popular. Apart from the popular ghazal, “Karoge Yaad To Har Baat" sung by Bhupinder Singh, he penned lyrics aside the revolutionary Urdu poet, Makhdoom Mohiuddin for the song, "Phir Chiddi Raat" sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Aziz. Music was composed by Khayyam.

 

He was born on August 18, 1935 at Aurangabad on August 18, 1935. He regularly published his ghazals and poems in various Urdu literary journals magazines in India and abroad. He wrote lyrics for the Bollywood films - 'Bazaar', 'Lori' and 'Jane Wafa', of which songs of Bazaar made him extremely popular in the 1980s. He mostly wrote ghazals for movies, sung by many legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Bhupinder Singh, Talat Aziz etc. Apart from songs and ghazals, he also scripted a few TV serials for Doordarshan. 13 episodes of the TV serial Amir Khusro in the 1980s and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in 2000 are among those. He also wrote 26 episodes of the radio show, "Sare Jahan se Accha Hindustan Hamara".

 

His works have been included in the anthology of Urdu ghazals since 1960s. His works have been translated to other languages such as Marathi, English, Hindi, Punjabi and Kannada. He was initially influenced by leftist ideologies and it well-reflected in his early works too. He passed away in 2015 aged 79. He passed away at Aurangabad after a brief illness. He is a recipient of prestigious "Pulotsav Samman" for his contribution to Urdu literature.
