Basappa Danappa Jatti Biography

Basappa Danappa Jatti was an Indian politician who served as the acting President of India from 11th February 1977 to 25th July 1977. He was born on 10th September 1912 in a Kannada Lingayat family at Savalgi village of Bijapur district of Karnataka state. He started his political career as a member of Municipality and rose to the height of President of India. His political career spans over five decades.

 

He was graduated in law from Rajaram College of University of Bombay in Kolhapur. He practised as a pleader in Jamakhandi and then appointed as the minister of Jamakhandi state. Later he became its Chief Minister. On 8th March 1948 Jamakhandi was merged with Bombay state and then he returned back to legal practice. After 20 months time he was nominated as the member of the Bombay State Legislative assembly. Then, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the then Bombay Chief Minister B G Kher.

 

He was appointed as the Minister of Health and Labor after 1952 general elections. He became a member of the Mysore Legislative Assembly after the reorganization and was made as the Chairman of the Land Reforms Committee. In 1958 he became the Chief Minister and was in the office until 1962.

 

In the third general elections he was elected from the Jamkhandi constituency and was appointed as the Finance Minister on 2nd July 1962 in the ministry of Nijalingappa. In the fourth assembly, he was elected from the same constituency and was made as the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies.

 

He moved to the national politics and was appointed as the Lt Governor of Pondicherry in the year 1968. He became the Governor of Orissa in 1973 and in 1974 became the fifth Vice President and served in this position until 1980. He was made as the acting president for a short time after the death of the then President of India, Fakruddin Ali Ahmed.

 

He was a religious man and the founder president of Basava Samithi propagated by the Hindu reformer Basaveshwara.
