Barun Roy Biography

Barun Roy is an Indian writer from Darjeeling who is also known as a journalist, cartoonist, essayist and blogger. Portraits of Life, a collection of short stories was his first published book. 2005 Bollywood film – Yahaan was based on the first story of the book - 'Nafisha'. Beginners Guide to Journalism, Portraits of Life, Modern Student Journalism, Gorkhas and Gorkhaland, ‘Words, Just Words’, Slim and Smart Body, ‘Vedas, Revisited’ and Fallen Cicada - Unwritten History of Darjeeling Hills are among his published books. He founded Beacon, the monthly news magazine in 1997 and served as its editor too.

 

Barun Roy was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal on 4 November 1977. His education was completed at Darjeeling and Chennai. His works are mostly concentrated on his native place. As an artist, cartoonist and writer, Realism and Satire are the genres he explored with. Known to be a dedicated journalist he founded Beacon, a monthly English news magazine published from Darjeeling. Beacon has been renamed as The Himalayan Beacon right now. Roy writes on the subjects -   Fiction, Spirituality, Theology, Politics etc.

 

BEACON is the largest and the first magazine to be published by and for the Darjeeling Hills.  This monthly news magazine was started by Baron in the year 1997. Since started the magazine became very popular among youth and later accepted by other generations also. It is now owned by The Mandalay Books India (Pvt.) Ltd which also publishes This Week and The Himalayan Traveller, other forms of periodicals. Started on 18 October 1997, its first issue was published on 15 January 1998, where Barun Roy served as the main editor.
