Barindra Kumar Ghosh Biography

Barindra Kumar Ghosh was an Indian revolutionary, freedom fighter, writer, journalist and one of the founding members of the revolutionary organization, Jugantar. He was the younger brother of well-known philosopher and yogi, who spent his early life as a revolutionist - Sri Aurobindo. As a writer, his published books include - Dvipantarer Banshi, Pather Ingit, Agnijug, Sri Aurobindo, Amar Atmakatha, Rishi Rajnarayan and The Tale of My Exile. He was associated with the newspaper ‘The Statesman’ and has also served as the editor of Bengali daily ‘Dainik Basumati’ for 9 years till his death in 1959.

 

Ghosh was born at Croydon, near London in 1880. His father, Dr. Krishnadhan Ghosh, was a doctor. Noted social reformer and scholar, Rajnarayan Basu was his maternal grandfather. Aurobindo Ghosh was Barindranath's third elder brother. Noted professor and poet Manmohan Ghose was also his elder brother. Barindranath studied at Patna College and also received military training in Baroda. It was during this time when he was drawn towards the revolutionary movements of his elder brother. So he reached Kolkata and started organizing various revolutionary groups. He was associated with great revolutionary Bagha Jatin (Jatindranath Mukherjee) in those days.

 

He started Jugantar, a Bengali weekly in 1906 and the revolutionary group, Jugantar just followed it. He was one among its founding members aside his elder brother Aurobindo. He has played a significant role in recruiting revolutionaries across Bengal. He was involved in the conspiracy of attempted killing of Kingsford, for which he was sentenced to death. However later it was reduced to life imprisonment. After spending in Andaman jail, he got released in 1920. Then he started his literal and journalism career. He was also associated with ashram of Aurobindo, who has accepted a yogi’s life by then.
