Baraguru Ramachandrappa Biography

Baraguru Ramachandrappa, a noted writer of Kannada is regarded as one of the prominent Litterateurs in the country at present. He is a part of Kannada film industry also who writes screenplays and directs movies as well. His documentary films are equally famous and he received Honorary Doctorate from University of Tumkur, Karnataka in 2008. He was honoured with Pampa Prashasti in 2011 by the Government of Karnataka for his significant contribution in Kannada literature.

 

As a director, his first movie was Oorina Kathe (1978) which fetched him the State award for best story writer. After that he received numerous awards at state and national levels for his film contribution also. He contributes as a scriptwriter, story writer, lyricist and director. His film Shanti is the second Indian film to enter the Guinness Book of World Records after Yadein, as the film that featured only one artist. The single character was portrayed by actress Bhavana. He received Karnataka State Film Award for Best Film twice for the movies, Kshama and Shanti. As a lyricist, he won state awards for the movie Thaayi in 2005. He has also won Karnataka State Film Award for Best Story twice - Ondu Oorina Kathe and Hagalu Vesha. His upcoming project is Angulimala, about Lord Buddha.

 

Ramachandrappa was born to Kenchamma and Rangadasappa in Baraguru village on 18 October 1946. As an academician he served at the Bangalore University as a professor in the Kannada department. He has also served as the Chairman of Kannada Development Authority, president for the Kannada Sahitya Academy and has closely worked with Doordarshan and several educational institutions. As a writer his works include - novels, collections of poetry, short stories, drama, research works and criticism. His book, Suntaragali won the Karnataka Sahitya Academy award. Samskruthi Shrama Mattu Srujanasheelathe, Shabari, Saahithya Matthu Raajakaarana Janapriya Pusthaka Maale, Kannada Prajne and Maryaadastha Manushyaraagona are a few among his noted works.
