Baradwaj Rangan Biography

Baradwaj Rangan is a writer, film critic and journalist from Tamil Nadu. He won the National Film Award for Best Film Critic in 2006. He is also a film dialogue writer. Currently he serves as a teacher at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.  He teaches a course on cinema. A reputed journalist, he wrote columns for leading newspapers of the country and has served as the deputy editor of the daily - The Hindu. He has published two books on cinema - Conversations with Mani Ratnam (2012) and Dispatches from the Wall Corner: A Journey through Indian Cinema (2014). Though he has no formal learning in film making or cinema writing, he is widely regarded as one of the best film critics of the country.

 

He completed Chemical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. His parents wanted him to be in a serious professional which provide financial stability and that’s why he chose engineering over his true passion. But he was fascinated with writing and loved reading critical analyses on world cinema. Once he got selected for a workshop by the Advertising Agencies Association of India, Mumbai which opened his doors to writing about cinema. With a scholarship he completed Master's degree in Advertising and Public relations and worked as an IT Consultant for 5 years in US. Yet he wanted to pursue his passion of writing.

 

He began his stint with media as a journalist, working with ‘The New Indian Express’. Then he got associated with The Hindu and Tehelka, writing film reviews and related articles. He wrote the dialogues for one Tamil film, Kadhal 2 Kalyanam. But the film got shelved. Apart from two books on cinema, he wrote one essay - Subramaniyapuram: The Tamil Film in English Translation (2014).
