Banwari Lal Joshi Biography

Banwari Lal Joshi was an Indian administrator, IPS officer and political figure, who has served as the governor of many Indian states. He served as the governor of Delhi from 2004 to 2007, followed by Meghalaya in 2007, Uttarakhand from October 2007 to July 2009 and Uttar Pradesh from 2009 to 24 June 2014, thus serving 4 different states within one decade. On 17 June 2014 he resigned from the post of Governor of Uttar Pradesh soon after BJP led Narendra Modi came to power at centre. As a politician he has held many administrator positions associated with Indian National Congress, soon after Indian independence. He passed away on 22 December 2017.

 

He has been an IPS office who took voluntary retirement in 1991 and got involved with social work. Before that he has worked in the role of an administrator in Ministry of Home Affairs, with Indian Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi, with the High Commissions of India at Islamabad and London, and with the Embassy of India at Washington D.C. He also had close links to different politicians of Indian National Congress, with whom he closely worked with.

 

Banwari Lal Joshi hailed from Chhoti Kathu, a small rural village of Rajasthan. He was born on 27 March 1936. He joined Indian Police Service in 1957 associated with state police force of Rajasthan. Five years later he moved to central government. During his association with national level politics and administration, he remained a very influential person within Indian National Congress. After voluntary retirement in 1991, he moved to US in 1993 where he worked with two s/w companies as an executive.
