Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar Biography

Pandit Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar was a famous Hindustani vocalist and the "founder of Khayal music in Maharashtra". He also learnt Gwalior Gharana of music from Vasudeorao Joshi and introduced it to Maharashtrian classical music forms. Thus he is credited to introducing Gwalior Gayaki to Maharashtra. D. V. Paluskar was a famous disciple of Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar, who played a major role in expanding appeal of classical music to common folks. Paluskar was not bound to a particular tradition of music. Instead he accepted different styles and forms of music to his singing and taught many students at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, named after his father Pandit V D Paluskar. Pandit Antubuwa was another established disciple who carried forward Balakrishnabuwa’s singing tradition.

 

A Maharashtrian, he was born in the year 1849. Gwalior Gharana is believed to be one of the earliest forms of Hindustani music which still enjoys popularity. Many other styles of music have their origin in this style and while young, Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar moved to Gwalior to learn this music form. Gwalior was then regarded as the Mecca of Hindustani music. He later got privilege to learn under under Vasudeorao Joshi. Once he returned back to Maharashtra, he settled near Miraj because its climatic conditions. Later Miraj became a hub to learn Hindustani music and existed for over 100 years.

 

He was the first to bring Gayaki to western India and owned many disciples. Apart from his own son Annabuwa, his disciples were D. V. Paluskar, Anant Manohar Joshi, Neelakanthbuwa Mirajkar, Mirashi buwa and Vamanbuwa Chafekar. His son died young which was a major sorrow to Balakrishnabuwa. His majestic and slow singing styles attracted many. He passed away in 1926 aged 77.
