Baiju Dharmajan Biography

Baiju Dharmajan is a well-accomplished guitarist from Kochi, Kerala. He is equally popular as a music composer, producer and guitar tutor, who currently is a member of the popular rock band – Motherjane, based on Kochi. Nicknamed the "God of Small Strings" by his fans, he is one of the finest guitarists Indian music has produced in the past one decade or so. He has been deeply influenced by many international artists like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Reb Beach and Brian May, with equal likes for Indian composers like Illayaraja, Naushad, R. D. Burman, Raveendran, Devarajan etc. Baiju also loves ghazals.

 

He was born in Vypin Islands of Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala. His grandfather was a Carnatic musician, and his father used to play the Hawaiian guitar. He was a great fan of music too and owned a huge collection of music cassettes of different Indian composers. Thus since young, Baiju got exposed to different forms of music. At the age of 5, he got opportunity to play solo guitar in a travelling guitar, and he got that opportunity from none other than the legendary singer of Malayalam – K. J. Yesudas. He started his formal learning in music at the age of 14 with Carnatic violin.

 

In the 1990s, he started working with different music bands such as Instinct, Wrenz and Aatma before he became the lead guitarist of Motherjane in 1999. The band released two albums - 'Insane Biography' in 2003 and 'Maktub' in 2008. Till 2010 he was the lead guitarist of the band before he started his solo career. 'The Crossover' in 2012 was his first solo album. He performs for music festivals and live shows.
