Bahadur Khan Biography

Bahadur Khan was a famous sarod player, music composer and musician. He combined folk music elements with that of the classical music and this great musician is remembered for this unique contribution given to music lovers. Khan was a regular performer at the All India Radio, Radio Pakistan, and Radio Bangladesh. He has given music to many movies directed by Ritwik Ghatak - Subernarekha, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, Jukti Takko Aar Gappo, Titash Ekti Nadir, Nagarik , Shwet Mayur, Yekhane Dariye, Trisandhyay, Notun Pata, Garam Hawa and Ajantrik to name a few. He received best music director award for Subernarekha. He was nephew of the Sarode legend Ustad Allauddin Khan. His two other brothers, Ustad Abed Hossain Khan and Ustad Mobarak Hossain Khan were famous Sarode and Sitar maestros from Bangladesh. Ustad Kirit Khan was his son.

 

He was born in January 19, 1931 in Shibpur, Comilla of present Bangladesh as the son of famous Indian classical musician Ustad Ayet Ali Khan. Ustad Alauddin Khan, the doyen of Indian music was his uncle. He was also the cousin of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi. First lessons of music were taught to him by none other than his father. Then he learnt music in maihar gharana from his uncle Ustad Alauddin Khan. He settled at Kolkata where he started giving concerts. Later he was guided in Sarode by his senior cousins Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi for a long time.

 

Apart from music concerts he has been associated with Bengali cinema as a music director. Among his students, Tejendra Narayan Majumdar is the most popular and talented one. He has also teached Indian music at Ali Akbar College of Music, in California.
