Bagha Jatin Biography

Bagha Jatin was a Bengali revolutionary philosopher who fought against British Raj. His real name is Jatindranath Mukherjee. He was the principal leader of the Yugantar party, an association of revolutionary members of Bengal to fight against British. Yet most Englishmen loved and respected Jatindranath Mukherjee. He was responsible for the planned German Plot during World War I. He was one among the founders of the Anushilan Samiti in 1900. The indoctrination of the Indian soldiers in various regiments in favour of an insurrection is the second noted contribution made by Jatin.

 

He was born on 8 December 1879 at his maternal uncles’ house at Koya, now a part of Bangladesh. His ancestral home was at Sadhuhati-Rishkhali in Jhenidah Subdivision of Jessore. His father Umeshchandra was a spiritual and patriotic person. Jatin lost his father at the age of 5 and later he was brought up in his maternal home. He along with his siblings was taken care of by his uncle Basanta Kumar Chattopadhyaya. His mother, Sharatshashi laid strong moral foundations on Bagha’s character. Aparet from studies, he was encouraged to be proficient in wrestling, swimming and riding. He gained a reputation for physical bravery and great strength as he grew up. He was also interested in doing mythological plays.

 

In 1895, he joined the Central College, Kolkata, for his First Arts. During this time he regularly used to visit Swami Vivekananda. For acquiring a greater physical force and nerves of steel, the Swami sent him to his own trainer in wrestling. In 1899 Jatin moved to Muzaffarpore in as secretary of barrister Pringle Kennedy. His writings and historical research impressed and inspired Jatin a lot. The following year he got married at the age of 21 and the couple had four kids.

 

He was one of the founding members of Anushilan Samiti in 1900 whose sole aim was to kill British officers. He joined hands with Sri Aurobindo who was a revolutionary in those days. The group aimed to win the hearts of Indian soldiers in British regiment. He drew the attention of the Prince of Wales towards the ill-treatment of British to Indians. Jatin, together with Barindra Ghosh, set up a bomb factory near Deoghar. The famous revolutionary Rashbehari Bose worked under the leadership of Jatindranath Mukherjee later.

 

During First World War, his party played an important role in controlling the activities of the Berlin Committee formed in Germany. He provided leadership and coordination in the entire process. But when his activities were noticed by police, he moved to Orissa. British sealed the coastal regions in the delta areas of the Ganges and the Noakhali - Chittagong side of Orissa. A reward was also announced by British government. Jatin Mukherjee and his companions took shelter at Chashakhand region in Balasore where he was tracked by British. He was injured by the gun shot and died the following day in Balasore hospital.
