Baby John Biography

Baby John was a senior politician from Kerala and veteran leader belonging to Kerala Revolutionary Socialist Party (Baby John). He was popularly known by the name, ‘Kerala Kissinger’ in the political circles because of his unique abilities to resolve political deadlocks and difficulties. His younger son, Shibu Baby John has now stepped into his shoes and a promising young leader of Kerala at present. Baby John has formerly served as the General Secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party. He was a key figure in coalition politics of Kerala for several decades. He was a freedom fighter, trade unionist too and a founder-member of the RSP in the country too.

 

Baby John was born in 1920 in Chavara Kollam to Sebastian John and Mary John. He was associated with student politics while at college and has also been associated with Indian freedom struggle. He was a union leader too while studying at Palyamkottai in Tamil Nadu and later he continued his studies at Kochi. He was arrested several times for participating in agitations. Though started with Congress, he was also influenced by leftist ideologies and was a founder-member of the RSP in the country.

 

His legislative career began in the early 1950s post Indian independence. He was elected to the Trvancore-Cochin assembly and after the formation of Kerala state in 1956 he has been elected to the Kerala assembly from 1960 to 1996 from Chavara constituency several times. Since 1970s he emerged as an eminent leader and known for his talents in varied roles.  He was a minister under Achutha Menon’s cabinet. After his death, his party slowly disintegrated.
