After receiving the teaching from Acharya Baldevji he entered Sanyas and changed his name to Ramdev. He spent many years in Haridwar and studied Indian scriptures at Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya. He started Divya Yog Mandir Trust with Acharya Bal Krishna. In the year 2003 he was featured in Aastha TV.

He promoted Ayurved and Yoga and for this he started Patanjali Yog Peeth project on 6th August 2006. He stressed the effectiveness of yoga against the diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc. Patanjali Ayurved College, Patanjali Chikitsalaya, Yog Gram, Go-Shala, Patanjali Herbal Botanical Garden, Organic Agriculture Farm, Patanjali Food and Herbal Park Ltd are run under his guidance.

His Patanjali Yoga Peeth publishes the book Yog Sandesh and this is published in eleven languages. He initiated a movement Bharat Swabhiman with with five goals: 100% voting, 100% nationalist thought, 100% adoption of Swadeshii, 100% unification of Indian people and 100% yoga oriented nation.

He worked to eradicate illegal mining. He protested against black money and gave few steps to remove corruption and black money. He held a rally of more than one lakh people on 27th February 2011 at the Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. Many people including Ram Jethmalani, Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh and many others participated.

He went on fast unto death against corruption and ended his fast on the ninth day after being requested by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and many others. He is opposed strongly by the congress government which launched Anti-Ramdev campaign.

Baba Ramdev claimed that he could cure diseases like AIDS and cancer through yoga and ayurvedic drugs though he did not prove them. He received honorary doctorate degree from many universities.

In 2014, Ramdev announced that Bharat Swabhiman intended to contest some constituencies in the general election of that year and to form alliances with some other parties. It was at this time that he voiced his support for Narendra Modi to become the next Prime Minister of India. His attempts to run yoga camps during that election campaign, allegedly to gain support for Modi, were stymied by the Election Commission of India (ECI) who determined that they were politically motivated. The ECI had also tried to control his use of camps in the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh state elections of 2013.
